Who make this possible
About Rasna
Rasna Mantha is a mixed media artist based in Vancouver, deeply committed to capturing the raw emotions that shape our world. As a queer, South Asian single mother with roots in the Middle East, Rasna's work is informed by a personal and diverse perspective. Through a blend of portraiture and abstract techniques, Rasna creates art that speaks to the heart and mind. Initially focused on simple shading in portraiture, Rasna has evolved to infuse their work with intricate details and a range of abstract styles, aiming to convey profound emotional depth.
The events of October 7th brought a new sense of purpose to Rasna's artistic journey. This moment has inspired a shift towards creating art that not only raises awareness but also encourages action and amplifies the voices of marginalized communities. Rasna's current painting marks the beginning of an exciting collaboration with other artists to boycott BDS companies and raise funds for Gaza. Through her art, Rasna hopes to inspire viewers to engage with pressing social issues, advocate for peace and justice, and remain steadfast in supporting Palestinian freedom. About Deo
Deo Rodriguez-Sulemanji is a mixed media artist whose work spans various forms, including makeup, photography, modeling, sewing, and both acrylic and digital painting. Deo's art often features vibrant colors, repetitive patterns, and transcendental imagery, deeply influenced by their upbringing in Panama. They explore themes of identity, heritage, magic, and connection to nature, viewing their artistic practice as a form of visual storytelling. Inspired by figures like Pat McGrath, Frida Kahlo, and Isabel Allende, Deo centers their work around women and queer people of color. Through their art, they strive to create a space where their community is reflected, celebrated, and empowered, inviting others to explore the extraordinary within the ordinary. Collaboration is key to their process, but even in solo projects, they foster a deep connection with their subjects, aiming to inspire others to celebrate their heritage and identity as they do their own.
Deo's participation in the Melonmade project in solidarity with Palestine stems from an overwhelming sense of helplessness since October 7, 2023, and a growing awareness of the Palestinian struggle over the past year. Through this project, they seek to contribute, even if in a small way, to the collective liberation they believe is possible by pulling at the threads that connect us all.
About Lubna
My work merges cultural symbolism with contemporary design, focusing on textiles and mixed media. This Palestinian hat exemplifies my approach, featuring the black and white keffiyeh pattern symbolizing resistance, and feathers in the four colors of the Palestinian flag (green, white, black and red) reflect a connection between my heritage and the ongoing journey of cultural preservation.
Inspired by my cultural background and the spirit of resilience, I blend traditional and modern elements to celebrate and preserve heritage. Each piece, including this hat, is crafted with materials of historical significance and intricate detailing to tell a story of identity and unity.
Growing up in a culturally rich, politically challenging environment, my art reflects the narratives of resistance and preservation. I aim to spark conversations about heritage and identity, encouraging appreciation for cultural histories through my wearable art.
The bucket hat is 100% cotton. It is about 23.62 inches/ 60 cm for head circumference.
Comfortable and Soft: the sun hat is made of breathable cotton material, comfortable to wear, not easy to fade or break, lightweight and portable, without giving you a weight burden.
The Keffiyeh strap is Made of premium breathable Polyester for ultimate comfort and durability.
These Feathers are about 4 inches in length. They are 100% genuine natural Goose Cochettes Feather. which are collected after natural shedding. All the feather items have been professionally cleaned, steamed and sanitized to perfection. Which are very safe and hygienic.
The Palestine Pin is made of high-quality alloy, ensuring durability and long-lasting wear.
Kuffia straps are stitched and the feathers are glued and the Palestinian pin is attached on top (removable)
About Sophie
